Occupational Therapy is based on a purposeful, goal-directed activity to promote health and well-being for individuals with disabilities. Occupational Therapy (OT) is a related services to assist children with a disability to access their Individual Education Plan (IEP) and receive a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). In the school setting, OT is a related service to special education under Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This means that services must enhance or support the educational goals as stated in the student's IEP. Occupation Therapists in the school setting assess certain skills (hand function, visual motor and perceptual skills, sensory awareness/processing, self-care and pre-vocational tasks) which may interfere with a child's educational performance.
These areas can be addressed through a variety of intervention strategies which may include consultation with the teacher, direct therapy with the child, modification of the environment, provision of adaptive equipment and staff training.
