PCHS Model UN Academic Team Wins the Southwest Florida Regional Championship for the 14th Consecutive Year!
Thirty seven country teams from 19 schools competed in the two-day event at Florida Gulf Coast University. The PCHS Russia delegation won the first place "Best Delegation" award, and another PCHS delegation representing Pakistan won the second place "Outstanding Delegation" award.
Since 2003, PCHS seniors have been awarded 34 of the 39 scholarships ($51,000) presented at the conference for their "Careers of Excellence." Four PCHS seniors were awarded $1,500 scholarships by the conference sponsers, The Naples Conference of World Affairs. The scholarship winner's are - Christopher Stampar, John Rioux, Jackson Barnett and Jason Mahon.
First Place "Best Delegate" awards - Chris Stampar, Karolina Povedych, John Rioux, Jason Mahon, Alison Bowman, and Rosie Mancini.
Second Place "Outstanding Delegate" award - Samantha Luce.
Second Place "Distinguished Delegate" awards - Brian Spadafora, Jackson Barnett, Samantha Fenelus, and Joe Capeto.
Third Place "Meritorious Delegate" awards - Cameron Fernandes and Ali Fullington.
Next up for the Pirates MUN is the Florida High School's State Championships in Tampa where PCHS will attempt to win its 8th consecutive MUN State Championship. Good luck team!
Congratulations to the 2010 CCPS History Fair Competition Winners
Over 550 students competed in this year's event at the school and county levels, and several entries will represent Charlotte County at the Florida State History Fair in May 2010. Click here for the list of winners.

Congratulations to the Charlotte High School Tarpon's Academic Team
CHS Tarpon's Academic Team won their opening match with Lehigh High School 375-0. The Tarpons dominated the competition by answering 37 questions to 2 for their opponents. The Tarpons have been one of the most dominant Academic Challenge teams in South Florida over the past few years, having reached the championship match in 2008 and the semi-finals in 2009. This year's team members are:

Congratulations to the Port Charlotte Middle School Mathletes!
The Port Charlotte Middle School Mathletes Team were 1 of 19 schools that participated in the Calusa Chapter Regional Math Competition where they placed third overall! This is one place higher than last year's finish of fourth place. An excellent performance by Clayton Threm, team captain placed him in 6th place overall as an individual contestant out of approximately 100 students. Clayton received a medal for his performance, and PCMS received a team trophy. The team members are: Clayton Threm (Captain), Gina Huffman, Tara Culkin, and Lindsay Joyner.
Port Charlotte High School Team wins the Mock Trial Competition in Charlotte County
The 24th annual Charlotte County Public Schools Mock Trial Competition was held Saturday, February 6, 2010 at the Charlotte County Justice Center, with the assistance of 15 local attorneys and 4 locals judges.
Congratulations to Port Charlotte High School. They will represent Charlotte County at the District 20 Mock Trial Competition on February 25th & 26th, 2010.

Deep Creek Elementary Student Designs County Library Bookmark
Congratulations to Brett Scena, 5th grade student at Deep Creek Elementary. Brett submitted artwork which was chosen as the new bookmark for the Charlotte County Library System. He received a cash award at a ceremony held at the library.
Congratulations to CCPS Students who Participated and Received Awards at the Regional Inventors Fair.
Approximately 100 Charlotte County students participated in the Regional Science and/or Inventors Fairs at Harborside in Fort Myers the last weekend of January. The following students received awards:
- Austin Bouhebent from Murdock Middle for his 4th place win in the 6th grade category for his invention: Shake and Quake
- Brian Delaney from LA Ainger Middle for his 3rd place win in the 6th grade category for his invention: The Refridgamonitor
- Laura Delaney from LA Ainger Middle for her 4th place win in the 8th grade category for her invention: Residential Solar Cooling
- Ryana Beegle from Lemon Bay High for her 1st place win in the 9th grade category for her invention: 911 Baby
Port Charlotte High School Model UN Academic Team Excels in the Ivy League Model UN Conference
PCHS Model UN Academic team spent four days in Philadelphia at the Ivy League Model UN Conference, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania and competed against 150 other schools across the country, as well as schools from China, Venezuela, Malaysia, Singapore, India, Costa Rica, etc. This victory pushes the PCHS MUN head to head record against other schools this year to 235-0. Next up is the Southwest Florida Regional Conference in March.
Seven Best Delegate Awards (1st place): John Rioux, Jackson Barnett, Cameron Fernandez, Ali Fullington, Danielle Rioux, Amanda Piazza, and Maddy Spencer.
Seven Outstanding Awards (2nd place): Cameron Mathewson, Christ Stampar, Rosie Mancini, Jason Mahon, Nick Stampar, Samantha Luce, and Jesse Hevia.

Congratulations to Kaela Neal, Port Charlotte Middle School 7th grader, and Winner of the Annual Daughters of the American Revolution Essay Contest!
Kaela wins a certificate, a medal, and $100. Sharon Monge from the local Daughters of the Revolution chapter will visit Port Charlotte Middle on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 to recognize Kaela, and present her with her award.
CCPS Exceeds Immunization Rate Goals Set by the State of Florida!
Each October, all Florida public and private schools with a kindergarten and/or seventh grade are required to submit reports indicating the immunization status of their kindergarten and/or seventh grade students.
The purpose of the status reports is to ensure compliance of section 1003.22, Florida Statutes, Florida School Immunization Law, and Chapter 64D-3, Florida Administrative Code, regarding immunization.
Charlotte County is proud to announce the results of the 2009-10 Kindergarten & 7th Grade Immunization Status Report indicates a 97.7% compliance rate for kindergarten, and a 99% compliance rate for 7th grade immunizations.
Congratulations to Punta Gorda Middle School seventh-grade student Sabrina Turney for winning the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Essay Contest.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day Essay Contest was sponsored by Benjamin J. Baker Community Development. Sabrina was recognized at the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade in Punta Gorda and was also presented an award at school by Punta Gorda Middle School teacher Mrs. Karen Brooks.
Charlotte High School Student, Jordan Abu-Elhawa is selected to participate in the elite All-State High School Reading Chorus.
Jordan Abu-Elhawa is a senior at Charlotte High School and a member of the Varsity Choir and CHARISMA. He was chosen as 1 of 100 students across the state of Florida to participate in the All-State High School Reading Chorus. This chorus, under the tutelage of Alan Raines of Baylor University, read 60 demanding pieces of vocal music literature in 2 days, and performed for approximately 2000 members of the Florida Music Educators Conference and their guests on the Friday, January 8, 2010. Congratulations Jordan!
Neil Armstrong Elementary School is recognized as one of Florida's Title I Distinguished Schools for 2008-2009.
Congratulations to Neil Armstrong Elementary staff and students for closing the achievement gap in reading and mathematics proficiency for Free and Reduced Price Lunch students and Students with Disabilities.
The Florida Title I Distinguished Schools award recognizes Title I schools that have made the greatest progress in sustaining high levels of academic achievement and for closing the achievement gap for students in the No Child Left Behind subgroups. These schools are a true example of educational excellence in Florida. This recognition is being awarded to only seventeen schools out of 1, 391 in the state, and shows a strong commitment by the Charlotte County School District and Neil Armstrong Elementary School staff to the highest quality education for all students!
CCPS Ranked #1 in the State for the Second Consecutive Year on Advanced Placement exams!
Charlotte County Public Schools are ranked # 1 in the State of Florida for the second consecutive year with the 61% of our students scoring a 3 or higher on Advanced Placement exams. No other district in the state scored in the 60% range.
- Currently our 3 high schools offer 17 of the 34 courses offered by the College Board.
- Advanced Placement classes are available to student in all 3 high schools beginning their freshman year.
- By taking AP classes students can gain an edge in college preparation and begin accumulating college credit.
- Students have an opportunity to develop study habits necessary for tackling rigorous course work and study subject is greater depth and detail.
- Exams are scores by the College Board on a scale of 1 to 5. Students earning 3 and above earn credit or advanced standing at most of the nation's colleges and universities.
- Enrollment in AP classes emphasizes a student's commitment to academic excellence.
- The number and scope of course offerings throughout the Charlotte County Public Schools reflects our on-going effort to set and maintain a high standard of achievement for our students.
- The number of tests taken in Charlotte County increased to 813 from the 645 AP tests taken in 2008.
- The District's #1 ranking in the State of Florida for the second year in a row for percentage of students scoring a 3 or higher is a statement of this commitment to excellence by our AP students and teachers.
