Steps for Success:

Complete the book "The Devil's Arithematic" by Jane Yolen.

Brainstorm a list of important aspects of the book, characters and/or wishes of the holocaust victims.

Give each student a stone. Have them carefully scuff sandpaper the surface of the stone so that the paint will adhere.

Wash and dry thoroughly. Try not to hold onto the stone with hands as the oil residue from the hands will cause problems with the paint sticking.

Lay a paper towel down and sit the stone on top.

Carefully paint each side of the stone with artwork based on brainstorm session. Let each side dry before moving to the other one.

Spray with sealer and let dry.

Cut cemetary stone for grave out of styrofoam. Have students decide what to put on the slab. We put the title on one side and a "Here lies...." on the other. Cut into the surface with dull pencil and go over it with a permanent marker to make darker.

Create a grave like mound and place cemetary stone a head. Have students place their individual stones onto the grave. Talk to them about the fact that a Jewish tradition in visiting the dead is to place a stone on the grave to mark that they were there.

Write a short essay, based on students increased knowledge about the Holocaust, that describes how the student's feelings have changed or not changed about the horrific events of the Holocaust through reading this book. Have a friend in the classroom read it, and sign it, to show that they actually did read it.
