PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – Charlotte County Public Schools (CCPS) celebrated a historic milestone today with the groundbreaking of a state-of-the-art aviation hangar at Charlotte High School, located at 1250 Cooper St., Punta Gorda, FL. This facility will serve as a hub for the district’s aviation program, providing students with hands-on training in aeronautics and aviation maintenance to prepare them for high-demand careers in the industry.

The new hangar will measure 80 feet by 110 feet, covering a total of 8,800 square feet, and will be equipped with industry-standard tools and technology to support student learning and skill development.
The groundbreaking ceremony brought together distinguished community and industry leaders, including the Vice President of Space Florida, Economic Development Partnership President Derek Rooney, and local State Representatives Vanessa Oliver and Danny Nix. Their presence highlighted the significance of this investment in workforce development and regional economic growth.

“Tomorrow’s workforce is sitting in today’s classrooms, and we know the programs we offer matter,” said Superintendent of Schools Mark Vianello. “Whether it be aviation at Charlotte High, cybersecurity at Lemon Bay, advanced manufacturing at Port Charlotte High, or dozens of other opportunities, we are providing students with multiple pathways and preparing them with a coordinated plan of what comes after high school – either in immediate employment, post-secondary enrollment, or military enlistment – and we are helping to build the talent pipeline within our community, region, and state.”
The aviation hangar is part of CCPS’s broader commitment to workforce development, equipping students with industry-relevant skills and certifications. The facility will enhance the district’s aviation program by offering real-world experience, aligning with industry standards, and fostering partnerships with local businesses and aviation professionals.

“This aviation hangar is a testament to our commitment to student success and workforce readiness,” said School Board Chairman John LeClair. “By providing access to cutting-edge facilities and hands-on training, we are ensuring that Charlotte County students graduate with the skills needed to excel in high-demand careers. This initiative is a game-changer for our district and our community.”
The aviation program at Charlotte High School is one of several new career and technical education (CTE) initiatives designed to support local and statewide workforce needs. Through this investment, CCPS is strengthening the talent pipeline and ensuring that students are well-equipped for the future.
