An unaccompanied youth, under the McKinney-Vento Act, is a student under 18 who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence and is not in the physical custody of a parent or guardian. This means they are experiencing homelessness and are not living with a parent or legal guardian.
This could look like a youth that has run away from home, or has been kicked out of their home. Sometimes this can look like a youth that has been left to take care of their own needs. Additionally, these youth might be living with friends or family, as they have no where else to go. Youth might be staying at a shelter, living in a car, park, motel, or bus/train station.
The Families in Transition (FIT) staff can assist unaccompanied homeless youth with services, such as food, supplies, enrollment documentation, community referrals, FAFSA application, and more. The FIT program can assist these youth to help them know their rights and help them stay in school and succeed.
